EAGARALT Our educational system has been in the news recently because of the school transport fees introduced by the Government. It takes something like this to make parents sit up and take notice, but how many parents are aware of an immense problem confronting their children and teachers at the present time. The problem is that a small (?) number of school-goers are being kept at school (often to keep them out of the way) but who have absolutely no interest in education. There's probably a few in every classroom and they are constantly hindering the work of teachers and causing unmeasurable damage to the young people who genuinely want to avail of the education being provided and pass their exams. It is a serious problem which needs to be tackled urgently. But how? 11 An tEagarth6ir 11 • Altannaf, N6taf, li treacha, Guess Who's sidelines, 7rl. for our next edition (??) reach us by February 23. Both these teams are also politically inclined with Celtic manager Colm HcBride, (a recent Senate candidate), a Loyal Garret man while Keadue 1 s man at the helm is a sta1+pc:h F.F. man. Which prompts the question about all the Gweedore men playing for Rovers - were they FOliti'cal s;.gnings?? The Teach 3an is packing in the crowds at present. Search me~ In the course of his address he complemented the Club on their extremely generous contribution to the Church Building Fund - £1,000, being 25% of the Club's share of the Mayor Election proceeds. He pointed out that he was pleased to be associated with the Mayor event and felt confident that, on the next occasion it would be possible to increase on £8,000. His term of office which began in Au~st 1 82 should continue 'till August 1 84, but, however he suggested that in recent times it had become popular to go to the Park at least once a year. Naturally, this gives rise to speculation about perhaps a Spring election. Whether or not he would be a candidate is yet uncertain. However, he did suggest that he would not be dictated to by a "small ramp" or by the ·· media, if the case should arise. For the past few weeks local plumbers have been inundated with request from over a wide area and the word is that they will have to work 'round the clock in order · to meet the urgent requests. The requests, it is understood have come from practically every telephone subscriber in the Rosses, to have taps, in most cases installed and in some cases removed. Plans are at an advanced stage for the staging of a "Keep it Countr,y" shov in Ostan na Rosann, · Dungloe on Saturday March 5. Full details will be available soon. And talking about music, the recent return of Foster & Allen to 6stan was another magnificent success in every sense of the word. The due performed like they never did before and the electric audience from the word go warmed up to them. An added attraction was the _appearance of a ~stery comedian whose identit7 was the best kept secret since the Spring of 0 1 Leary to Fine Gael. It was in fact the lovable :rr. Pat McHugh from the Comphrensive School, Glenties. His performance too was superb and the audience cried , out for more. In addition to his keen sense of wit which reminds one of Frank Carson or Gene Fitzpatrick he is well capable of singing . difficult songs. As always there were those who were disappointed - at least 100 people who turned up after the "Full House" sign was displayed. At a special draw held during the function Patrick Doohan, Gortahork-was the winner of a portable T.V. and the profit from the draw– £609 was presented to Fr.
