The starting tilllt! vas set for .3 o'clock. Gradually, the crowds started coming into the DRAB village. Jilluay 1 s house vas packed; so vas Maggie 1 s. The7 had a great view from there. I know if it vas rq houae, I would have charged a tee of at least £5. Tension vas aountiDg, T.V. crews getting impatient. The Silver Sisters all dressed up. Then comes the Acres junior band, under Major Boner N.T. Thq pla;yed tor a long time in the front garden. Then a silver ear appeared and the cheer went up. The car drove around the back of the house. The cameras all focused on the front door. Another cheer calllt! as all the band members came out of the house followed b.r the Head Sister and the Lord Mayor. The T.V. 11en ran up to take a close-up. The Head Sister made a speech and then the Ma7or made his, sa7ing he was glad to be there to ofticiallJ· open the sChool. He hoped th97 would get a grant. Another cheer. Things were still tense across the road. Finall7 the Sister gave the Mayor a scissors and he cut the tape to officially open the school. All were taken in for a snack and a lesson in histocy. But ever, rboq vas waiting to see it on TV two nights afterwards . However R. T .:1. didn 1 t ahow it and I would not blalle them. After a large meeting in Dungloe the7 were asked not to aove into the bogs until an official from the Department arrived. But that suggestion went unheeded and one aan fr(')ID Lower Keadue said he was going ahead to cut the bog he had been given. This belonged to an O.A.P. from Lackenagh. ThankfU117, the LaDd Comaiseion sent letters the next da7 telling those who had been given the bogs not to touch them. Thq would find plo~s elsewhere for them. So it vas a bapP7 ellding for all. The O.A.P. had his bog paired tree. He said afterwards the7 made a dallned bad job ot it and said he would not like to see them cutting the bog.
