GILLESPIE ) 'The Donegal Person of the Year' at a special dance organised by the Dublin Branch of the Donegal Association in the Gresham Hotel, Dublin, recently. Willie Joe emigrated to America in December of 1948, and some months later became involved with the 'Donegal Association of New York'. He has held the top positions as the Associations auditor, trustee, director, secretary, Vice-President, and of course as President of the Association. It was in New York that Willie Joe met his wife Ellen (nee Boyle), from Gweedore, and they were married in 1953, and 1 lived happily ever after' says Willie J 0 e. He was on hand to welcome Irish visitors such as the late Taoiseach Sean Lemass, Taoiseach Jack ~eh, Taoiseach Charles Haughey, Neil Blaney, T.D, M.E.P., Cardinal Thomas 0 1 Fiaich, and Bishop Seamus Hegarty to New York. Willie Joe has helped to promote various functions such as 'Mary from 'Dungloe 1 in the States, and has been involved in selecting the'New York Mary'. He has helped to collect for various needs in his native county. He recently retired as President of Chapter 402 of the Civil Service Employees Union.
