Guth & Tuairim, Meán Fómhair 1983

, MAGHERY 3 Sunday, 7th August saw the official opening of the new sportsfield at Maghery· and also the closing of a very successful festival. Mr. Arty Gallagher, a native of Maghery and a ~epresentative of the Donegal Association in America, performed the official opening. On Saturday night the "King" of the Festival was chosen in the Strand Bar. Five independent judges were given the difficult task of choosing the "King" from the hundreds of stunning men on view- all waiting expectantly, counting the hairs on their chests, licking on their moustaches and sleeking back their hair. Tension was high when the winner was announced - our very own John Brown, better known as "Big Yin". James Glackin came a sporting second and immediately took over the duties of the king who was too overcome to make a speech. Big John collapsed in tears while Paddy McGee had to be helped from the pub - both overcome by what they called "the judges" harsh decision. Next morning the "King" and his second– in-command were taken on a motorcade through their parish, led by Pat the Cope. On the way back to Maghery, the "King's" crown was suddenly wrenched from his head. Rumour has it that a jealous rival took a pot-shot at him but the "King" dismissed this notion, saying no one could envy thetask ahead of him in the coming year, with personal appearances, speeches, etc. Next year will see an even bigger and better festival in Maghery.
