DUNGLOEI 4 Before attempting to put pen to paper I glanced through the last edition in which the Editor saw fit to publish The Kerryman's Contribution. For reasons best known to himself. The· Kerryman has ceased to operate as our local correspondent. If his departure was of a voluntary nature, then I feel sure the Editor will pay his own tribute. WEDDING BOUQUETS I BASKETS, SPRAYS, BUTTONHOLES. GILLESPIE READY- MIXED CONCRETE Well, since the last edition, the events worth recording include the by-election, the Festival and the Marquee. Regarding the election, well, a,book could be written on the "local" incidents which occured during the campaign and particularly on polling day and night. However, if I were to record honestly, such events could only be described and fully appreciated by using the "real" names of the characters involved, and in so doing, (we could) cause embarrassment and thereby defeat tbe purpose for which this contribution is intended. Festival While the official opening was disappointing in that the attendance was small, it was nevertheless no indication of what was to follow for seven days and nights. On the night of the opening, I overheard an interesting conversation between A 7 B about the crowd at the opening. A. I never saw so few people on Dungloe street. B. Hauld your tongue. I saw a lesser number of people here during the last m;_ssion. A. Dont be smart. What I mean is - at an outside event. B. You're wrong there too. Sure you must have been here on the morning of Saturday May 7th when the Taoiseach came to town. A. You're right there; I was indeed and I well remember it was generally agreed that if the rain came on that the Taoiseach and his followers could shelter in the two public phone boxes. But as the week progressed the crowds which converged would in no way remind one of the numbers which would follow a man going to drown h:i.s dog." The Fistival was a tremendous success and full marks must go to the new, "cool" director, James Gillespie and his "small" energetic committee who left no stone unturned in ensuring this great success. When we recall that his year's committee put the show on the road within a few weeks, we must, to say the least, salute every single member. It is hoped that, in addition to being a huge success from an entertainment point of view, that finiancially it also proved successful. Snub for Mayor This year's Letterkenny International Festival Committee not only failed to invite the Rosses' Mayor to its Official Opening ceremony, but added insult to injury by extending an invitation to the old Mayor who readily accepted. A spokesman at the Mansion House, when asked to comment about the situation, had only thi s to say: "Functions such as these are geared totally towards adaults and our present Mayor is more likely to be invited to (attend) rock festivals."
