LilmJN MAC LU Sometimes sensible - sometimes funn;y• · Long long ago in the barren west of the couhtry there lived a man called plain Joe Soap. Now Joe Soap his daily work and just minded his own business. He was a quiet, unassuming man who paid all his ··church on Sundays and never bothered anybody. One day Joe heard that the electricity generating station was closing down. A lot of people who cut on the station for a living and Joe felt really sorry for them. Some ~ime later Joe was surprised to a Government training centre in the area was also going to close down. The instructors in the centre were moved to another centre in the big Gity in the east. A lot of people in the area depended on the centre for a living. It brought a lot of money into the area. Now it was closing down Joe learned. He was very annoyed. Even more so when he heard factories in the area were going to shut. A lot of factories had closed down before. People said there was a fiddle going on here and there. Some people got rich. There was a lot of scandal in the factories, like people who got large reduncancies one week and stabted working in another factory the following week. A lot of people knew people who got them jobs. Honest· Joe didn't think this was very fair. The roads in Joe 1 s area were very bad. In fact they weren't really roads, just dirt tracks. Potholes were sometimes filled, sometimes not. A lot of money was squnadered. In the far distant East large motorways were being built. They cost a lot of money and honest Joe wondered why everybody didn't get a fair share of the cake. These things started to worry honest Joe. He talked about them a lot. Maybe he talked too loud. Maybe he talked to the wrong people. Maybe Joe really liWI. away in the head when the men in the white coats took him away. He was screaming but nobody said anything. Joe's neighbours didn't talk about these things -at least not out loud. Maybe plain Joe Soap really was crazy? M~be? Easy on the Sugar~ "Here Jim, a cup of tea, Sugar?"
