The Loughanure Shore One evening of late as I rambled 'Round the edge of the rough rocky shore, I remembered the days of my boyhood, And companions not there anymore. It was there that we all ~;~yed together, ' Till the bones in our bodies were sore, But now I am only a dreamer Alone on the Loughanure Shore. The "gentry" they came in their hundreds To fish and be part of the scene, The view form the lake it was lovely as the fileds were an emerald green. !Jut the years they have altered the picture Gone are the days of Yore. The fields are now dull and deserted ' :·ond by the Loughanure Shore. The swans they were there in abundance, As they selfishly guarded their care and they nested on heathery islands The home of. the pigeons so fair, But the wildlife has also departed Together wither seanachas and lore, The cry of the curlew is silenced Around by the Loughanure Shore. The limekilns are now only history where once they were factories for all. The smoke from their wide open chimneys Was seen arm•~1d West Donegal. No fortunes were made from that venture By our fathers who lived here before, But they managed t o eke out a living Around by the L oughanure Shore. The tech it was there for the learning, And served the townlands around, But now it stands lonely and vacant, The structure itself is unsound. But 'though its classrooms are empty, And will not be used anymore, The name is still over the doorway Overlooking the Loughanure Shore. What attracts Berni to McFadden's Hotel? The years are now closing around me, I am not now as f i t as before, Perhaps that i s why I'm lamenting As I ramble around t he "Loch Mhor," But if I was afforded a deathwish I would definitely s ettle the scor e, And spend the whole of eternity Around by the Loughanure Shore.
