7 Pop 1'0P A SONG FOR EUROfE: Our brief was to listen to 450 cassette tapes and select eight to be performed in the 19th National Song Contest. The selected songs are as follows: 1 - "Problem~"• composed by Ray Doherty, sung by Girl Talk; 2 -:~Bee BUNBEG WOOD INDUITRIEI Bop Delight", by Charlie McGettigan who also sings the /J song; 3 - "The Show Is Over", by Richard Abbot, sung by Rob Strong; 4 - "Terminal Three", composer Johnny Logan, singer Linda Martin; 5 - "Just Like INDUSTRIAL ESTATE Manufacturers of Fitted KrtchenB, Bedrooms, de. Making your own Kitchen or Bedroom ? We supply Doors ready made Children", by Thomas McPartland, pe5formed by Aileen Pringle; 6 - "This Is For You", composed by John McRea, singer Flo McSweeney; 7 - "April Wont Be Here Till September", composed and sung by Thomas McPartland; 8 - "My Love And You", composed by Maxi and Denis Woods, sung by Sheeba. The winning song will receive £1,000 and will represent us in Luxembourg in May, the rest of the songs get £250. The songs will be performed, one weekly on the Late late Show, with the gala final on March 31st when eight member juries in eight locations will select our song for Eurovision 1 84. Incidentally out of the 6oO plus songs on the cassettes, only three were in Irishl TOP OF THE POFS Boy George and Culture were the top selling single act in the UK in 1 83 with their single 'Karma Chameleon' the only single to sell a million plus copies. Billy Joel was top male selling artist with 'Upton Girl', and Welsh songstress Bonnie Tyler was tops with 'Total Eclipse of the Heart•. In the album league, Michael Jackson topped with 'Thriller', top group were Culture Club with 'Colour by Numbers' and top female seller was •stages' by Elaine Paige. The top selling Irish single for 1 83 went to Paddy Reilly with 'Fields of Athenry' while his 'Paddy Reilly Live' was the top selling album selling 30)000 in a matter of days. U2 were our top export as both albums 'War' and 1 Under A Bloody Red Sky' made both the American and British Charts for Bono and Company. NEW DISCS: . Mairead Nf Mhaonaigh and husband Frankie Kennedy issue their debut album on Gael-Linn entitled 1 Ceol Aduaidh 1 • Both former members of Ceoltoiri Altann, the album features a superb collection of traditional tunes and songs. The much talked about 'Robin Hood' series which An Clannad are featured on soundtract will not hit our television screens till March, REPLY TO THEIR CRITICS: RTE Radio 2 say they play in excess of 20,000 records by Irish artists yearly, almost 400 airplays in an average week. But Irish artists want RTE, both l and 2 to play at least 40 percent home recorded material in their daily transmissions. NOT FOR TRANSMISSION: Back in September Eithne N! Bhraonain and her group recorded a spot for RTE's Festival Folk Series. But now her guest spot along with Scullion and Hotfoot has been axed from the series.
