NATIONAL MONUMEN.DS SECTION 0ifi£e of !Public iWorks, 10, Hume Street, iDuiblin, 17th August, 1948. To J. C. T. MacDonagh, Esq. . Dear Sir,. Having been very busy, I am now only able to thank you for the copy of the Journal of the County .Donegal . HistioricaJ: Sodety rw:Mch: YIOIU! so kl~ sent .to me with your letter of the 12th of August. I am very interested to hear of the formation of the Soci~ty and wish it every success in its objects. With regard to national monuments in the county, which are already in t.he charge of the Commissioners of Public Works, I must say that the number is smaller than it should be; a page of the schedule which I enclose shows the full tally to date. But, in the a·bsence of fully detailed information about the monuments oif 1tlhe coun1Ql--()t" any county~it is difficult to decide what examples should be in State charge, which might be more suitably cared for by the local authority (the Sitate e:annot ble e%Pe:cted 1:9 1prese1rive· eveiry!thii:ng and it is more. healthy that local interest should be fostered), and which monuments can be sufficiently protected by Preservation Orders only. \It is in making a well detailed descriptive schedule of the remains in its area that, ln Jnly' O!Pinioo·, a 1ooa[ oocd!ety can best help in the preservation of monuments. ·Such a schedule would also help in the building up of the general archaeological survey of·the whole country which is being made in this department. Doe Castle has not yet, unfortunateily, received 'tlhe repairs which it requires. It has been on the list for action for a long time, btut it has not yet proved possible to detach a supervisor for the work. The report upon which action was first taken for the acquisition of the castle as a national monument is an official document which I am not in a position to copy and send to you. It is, however, very general in its character and lacks details. In fact it contains much less information than has already been :published · in various CLASS F.--1\~onuments vested undetr the National Monuments Act, 1930. OLASS G.-Monuments of which the Oommi.ssiOriers have become Guardians und.er the National Monullil, ents .A.et, 1930. journals. Yours faithfully·, H. G. bEASK. Inspector o{ National Monuments.
